At the JWMF Annual General Meeting held on 9 November, all committee members were re-elected as follows:
Marshall Irwin as President
Karen Garner as Vice President
Jacinta Wagner as Treasurer
Justine Hampson as Secretary
Sarah Bradley as Management Committee Member
Richard Galloway as Management Committee Member
Following the AGM, nearly 40 members and supporters enjoyed drinks and Middle-Eastern food platters before listening to a most informative and interesting talk by Kate Schuetze, Amnesty International’s representative for law and human rights in the Asia-Pacific Region. Kate spoke of the present situation in Papua New Guinea where a number of people are on death row, including eight sentenced to death only this year for their involvement in the brutal killing of seven people, including two children, who they thought were conducting sorcery. The current position regarding the death penalty in other countries in our region, and Amnesty International’s work towards the global abolition of the penalty, were discussed. The evening was a congenial occasion during which members and supporters could learn about the activities of the JWMF and action against the death penalty more broadly.
