Iran: rise in executions of women and for drug-related offences
Iran has reportedly executed at least 901 people in 2024 according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
A recent article has reported that the total is the highest recorded in nine years and marks a 6% increase from 2023.
Further, most of the executions were for drug-related offences and there was a rise in the number of women executed.
Mr Türk said that “the death penalty is incompatible with the fundamental right to life and raises the unacceptable risk of executing innocent people. And, to be clear, it can never be imposed for conduct that is protected under international human rights law."
