The power of campaigning

Amnesty International have reported that global executions have hit their highest figure since 2015, where 1,500 people were executed across 15 countries in 2024, pursuant to Amnesty International’s release of its annual report on the global use of the death penalty.

It has been reported that:

  • Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are responsible for 91% of executions

  • there are States weaponising death penalty against protesters and ethnic groups

  • there has been a rise in drug-related executions in violation of human rights

Despite this, Amnesty International have highlighted the difference campaigning makes and the power it holds to create change. “When people prioritise campaigning for an end to the death penalty, it really does work,” said Agnès Callamard. “Despite the minority of leaders determined to weaponise the death penalty, the tide is turning. It’s only a matter of time until the world is free from the shadows of the gallows.”
